By 1993 Challenge was a victim of her age and neglect. She was due to be scrapped but was saved by the Dunkirk Little Ships Restoration Trust which set only months before to save such historic little ships.
Thanks to the generosity of Alexandra Towing and the Port of Tilbury, the Tug Sun Thames towed Challenge to Tilbury Docks where the restoration got under way.
A team of dedicated volunteers worked on the restoration helped out by a team from the Duke of Edinburgh's award qualifiers. Thus meeting the second objective of the DLSRT which is to educate the public in the skills necessary to rebuild and maintain the vessels.
Challenge had to be moved from were she was berthed in St Katharine's dock to the river so that a tug could tow here to Tilbury.
This had to be done with muscle power alone.
Hard work but we managed it in the end.
